COVID-19-induced hypoxaemia: Focus on red blood cells
Recent observations suggest that COVID-19 causes an “atypical” form of
acute respiratory distress syndrome with impaired pulmonary circulation
and enhanced thromboembolism. In this letter we have proposed that the
interaction between erythrocytes and endothelial cells may have a
crucial role in pathogenesis of COVID-19. Acknowledging this interaction
suggests new targets for transnational research during the pandemic.
