The World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg), formerly known as the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC) and founded in 1971, is an international non-profit institute for vegetable research and development. The Center mobilizes resources to realize the potential of vegetables for healthier lives and more resilient livelihoods. WorldVeg’s improved varieties, production and postharvest methods help farmers increase vegetable harvests, raise incomes in poor rural and urban households, create jobs, and provide healthier, more nutritious diets for families and communities. The Center’s headquarters is located in Shanhua, Taiwan. Operations in Asia and Africa are led from regional centers in Bangkok, Thailand (for East and Southeast Asia); Hyderabad, India (South and Central Asia); Arusha, Tanzania (Eastern and Southern Africa), Bamako, Mali (dry regions of West and Central Africa); and Cotonou, Benin (coastal and humid regions of West and Central Africa). The Center operates in other countries on a project basis. WorldVeg conducts discovery research, pilots innovations, and scales best technologies and practices in concert with farmers, public and private sector partners, research institutions, and civil society. The WorldVeg genebank holds the world’s largest public collection of vegetable seed—a vital global resource for breeding resilient, productive and nutritious vegetable varieties.
