Poor adherence to home-based exercise \cite{Light_2016}, in addition to the poor adherence that is typically observed in eHealth interventions \cite{Eysenbach_2005}, is making the implementation of welfare technologies for physical activity a challenging issue. To face this challenge we will use a computer-based tailored motivational support element. A computer-based tailored intervention is one that is automatically adapted to the characteristics of each individual, typically based on responses to a questionnaire or other factors. Tailoring is a well-documented technique to increase effectiveness and tailored health information is perceived as more interesting and personally relevant, liked better, read more thoroughly, discussed more, and remembered better compared to non-tailored educational material \cite{Brug_1999,Campbell_1994,Oenema_2001,de_Nooijer_2002}. Our center has successfully developed and implemented tailored interventions for diabetes \cite{Wangberg_2007}, the tailored intervention slutta.no for smoking cessation \cite{Wangberg_2011}, and the more relevant e-Rehab, an Internet- and mobile-based tailored intervention for physical activity in cardiac rehabilitation \cite{Antypas_2014}. In a small-scale RCT, the tailored version of e-Rehab was shown to help users maintain high level of physical activity over longer period in comparison to the control group, and the difference was statistically significant.
ON HOW TO INCLUDE IT IN THE STUDY ARMS I HAVE 2 SUGGESTIONS BUT I THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH YOUR PRIORITIES. I PREFER THE 1st VERSION BUT IT IS UP TO YOU:
1. VERSION IN COMBINATION WITH THE WEARABLE WRISTBAND
The user that will be randomised to this arm, will be asked to fill an online questionnaire prior in order to create a "psychological profile", that will be used for tailoring the intervention to each individual. The tailored motivational support will be using data from the wearable wristband to detect a decrease in the level of physical activity. When a certain period of decrease that is not typical for that individual is detected, a motivational support session will be initiating. The motivational support will be delivered through automatically tailored SMS-messages. The tailoring will also be taking into account the local weather conditions (for example bad weather at the user's area) and the date of the decrease (if for example is during a holiday season) to make the advice more relevant for the users. The motivational support will be continuing until the wearable wristband detects increase in physical activity. The motivational support element will be also "rewarding" increased physical activity with messages to the users that need it based on their "psychological profile".
2. VERSION INSTEAD OF A CONTROL GROUP
The user that will be randomised to this arm, will be asked to fill an online questionnaire prior in order to create a "psychological profile", that will be used for tailoring the intervention to each individual. The tailored motivational support will be sending SMSs every other week asking whether the user is being physically active. If the user has not been active, he or she will have to follow an http link send with the SMS, and this will be activating the motivational support element. The motivational support will be delivered through automatically tailored SMS-messages. The tailoring will also be taking into account the local weather conditions (for example bad weather at the user's area) and the date of the inactivity (if for example is during a holiday season) to make the advice more relevant for the users. The motivational support will be continuing until the user states that is again physically active. The motivational support element will be also "rewarding" increased physical activity with messages to the users that need it based on their "psychological profile".
