Several factors contribute to E. coli’s ability to persist in the soil, but soil drainage has been shown to be of particular relevence.  We isolated E coli from lysimeter leachate from soils known to be protected from contamination for over 9 years[cite].  Eight  of the isolated strains lacked the ability to produce curli.  To further investigate the genomics of this phenotype,extracted DNA with X method, and sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq XXX (Microbes NG, University of Birmingham, UK).
