Literature Review PPAHS: Physician-Patient Alliance for Health and Safety Movement is a critical factor to improving patient health.

  1. Why? Patient Ambulation , or the ability to walk from place to place independetly with or without an assistive device, is necessary to improve joint and muscle strength, as well as prevent pressure ulcers during extended bed rest.
  1. Why? Hastings et al reported on a 2014 study that 1,504 patients who underwent knee arthoplasty and ambulated early decreased their length of stay with 1 day or more.  In addition, ambulation improves patient quality of life and reduces LOS (length of stay).

"Mobilizing hospitalized patients can decrease the risk for or prevent pneumonia and DVT, provide benefits to physical function (pain,fatigue), decrease anxiety and depression, and improve patient satisfaction (Kalisch, Lee, & Dabney, 2014)."
