Grade Level: 5th Grade+
Suggested Time: 50 mins
Overview:
Students will create a 60-90 second rap about their future to pre-recorded music designed by them. Students will have the opportunity to use discovered materials and computer aided sounds to build beats and background music to a song they perform.
Objective:
Students will enhance technical skills in performing and fine arts
Students will convey personal interests through performance art
Students will gain comfortability in project presentation
Materials:
- Box of random materials that have noise potential (paper towel rolls, beads, bottles, rubberbands etc)
- 1 iPad or iPhone per group with Garage Band installed
- Pen/Pencil
- paper or note pad
Activity:
- Divide students into groups based on availability of technology and desired student groups (ideally 3-5 students in one group)
- Let the students know they are challenged to write and perform a free-style rap song about their future to a beat they create. Each rap must include a smart goal from every participant, but not everyone has to deliver the rap.
- Provide a short Demo tutorial on Garage Band (if needed). (5 minutes)
- Give students a short time to plan and chose their materials (10 minutes). Who is performing, writing, and producing? What kind of beat should they create? What materials are needed to create the sound?
- Students will work to write the lyrics, build beats, and record their make-shift instrument sounds on Garage Band. (20 minutes)
- Students will perform songs for the class.
Debrief:
- What materials did your group select and why? What makes some materials "musical" and others sound like noise?
- What method of music production did you prefer to work with, Garage Band or the hand made instruments? Why?
- In what ways is it easier to talk about your future goals through music vs. an essay? In what ways is it harder?
